Christmas Afterglow

Hello Friends!  I hope your Christmas was wonderful. We made it through December, and today finds me in a quiet place as all the Christmas decor has been put away for another year. It is a rainy foggy and cold day, a day meant for reflecting and counting my blessings for it has been quite a year that none of us could have ever predicted.

Our family truly embraced the season and held tight the meaning as we attended Christmas Eve church service ...in our cars holding candles out the window singing Silent Night.

No question the holiday season of 2020 was by far
very different from all our past celebrations.
I truly missed those family members
who could not be with us this year.

We all needed a little joy in our lives and
so grateful for those we love whether physically near
or in our hearts this year.

Come on in our home...the door is open and our hearts are full.

Tradition at our house is cutting a real tree
and decorating it with family ornaments...
including  a few Shiny Brites from my childhood.

The antique engraving over the fireplace is quite special as my husband
surprised me with "Meeting the Carriage" one Christmas.

My needlepointed tree skirt has seen many Christmas's!

Water is kept nearby for the tree drinks several pans of water a day!
Each ornament holds a memory of a special person or a place.
Some of the ornaments I made before I was even married!

The handmade sled underneath the tree holds
the Christmas books that love to be read year after year.

A roaring fire in the fireplace and
the aroma of a real tree...smells of the season!

A place of honor for the nativity scene

Music plays an important role in our family as both
of our sons play the violin.
This violin was their great grandfathers.

In the kitchen of our 102 year old home is the light fixture
adorned with fresh greens, berries and white doves.

A bit of greenery and red velvet ribbon dress the kitchen clock .

Our kitchen is tiny by todays standards, but I love it.

Salt and Pepper shakers from a friend makes the red truck!

Vintage glasses and my grandmothers butter dish

The green lamp was a wedding gift to my mother and dad
who had very little to begin housekeeping.

Nothing says warm and cozy more than
a warm glowing lantern in the corner of the kitchen.

Even my laundry room has a Christmas mouse or two.

And the Christmas cactus went crazy this year.

On a low kitchen shelf is a row of lighted treasures
for our little ones to admire. Just perfect height
for a two year old to "twiddle".

A Christmas plate my mother gave me
the year we were married is a treasure I bring out every year.
Needlepoint pillows are my favorite.

I have such amazing memories as a child, especially of my grandmother.
This book on a side table was a Christmas gift from her teacher in 1905 !
My mother used to read it to me before bedtime.

Christmas dinner was just different this year.
Not all our family was together,
and it just seemed so strange.

No added leaves in the table, No tablecloth this year,
but a gold table runner just seemed right.

A favorite little boy helped me clove the oranges.

Though I could never forgo a candlelit Christmas meal
on my Christmas plates,
it is who sits around my table
 that really matters.

So today finds me in a quiet place, as we end this crazy year...
grateful for all my loved ones and blessings granted.

However your holidays unfold, whether shared with an extended family
or a small circle of loved ones, I wish you joy in the coming year and
may God hold us all in the palm of His hand.

I love when you leave a comment.
I read every one of them!

5 Tips for Caring for Mums

Happy Wednesday friends!  I freshened up the Boat House
and around the grounds with a few chrysanthemums.
They add a charming amount of color to the fall landscape,
and the Boat House is a great little retreat for fall.

When the days are warm, the nights are chilly
and the leaves are just starting to think about
turning to those pretty fall colors...
then it is time to add some mums!

From the Boat House to the Front Porch, Mums add fall color
and dress the landscape in the charm of the season.
Fall is appearing around the house as well.

It is hard to do, but when selecting your Chrysanthemum plants,
look for ones with buds that haven’t bloomed yet.
They should only have a sneak peak of color
to confirm what color they will bloom.

Most mums will be have cramped roots,
and  to get the most out of your plant,
you should probably plan on repotting
it in a larger vessel once you bring it home.

If you repot your mum, use potting soil or we have
manure from the barn that is nutrient rich.

Mums like sun, so try to tuck your pot in a sunny area.

I have had to learn the hard way to water thoroughly and watch over the coming days to see how long it takes for the soil to start losing its moisture for you don’t want the soil to be soaking wet.   Watch daily for you don’t want it to dry out either. In my case, I water my mums every other day when it’s hot and every 3-4 days when its cooler. Again, the key is not letting the plant dry out but not to overwater either.

When blooms are sagging and are looking like they’re spent,
clip them off so the plant can focus its energy on other blooms.

Somehow spending time in the autumn
garden is especially satisfying this year.
With just a little attention, your mums
should last beautifully through the season.

I hope you are all doing well and
enjoying some peace and beauty
during these troubled times.

Welcome Fall, 2020 .... Hugs!

Front Porch Wedding

Front porch weddings might be trending as the coronavirus seems to take hold and cause a lot of couples to rethink their wedding as originally planned.

Recently we hosted a "Plan B" wedding for a very special Magnolia Hill bride who is a hero in her own right as a member of the National Guard.

“The National Guard is fully involved at the local, state, and federal level in the planning and execution of the nation’s response to COVID-19,”
a National Guard Bureau spokesperson said in the release.
“At the national level, Guard members are training personnel on COVID-19 response, identifying and preparing National Guard facilities for use as isolation housing, and compiling state medical supply inventories,” the release continued. “National Guard personnel will provide assistance to the states that include logistical support, disinfection/cleaning, activate/conduct transportation of medical personnel, call center support, and meal delivery."

Our hero National Guard bride Maria and her fiance´ Santiago, chose to go ahead and postpone the wedding with all friends and family to instead,  have a simple sweet Front Porch Wedding.

We rallied around our "hero" and gave her an intimate wedding with only parents and immediate family to watch safely from a distance.

On the table a Bible
and hand sanitizer...what a sign of the times!

The Arkansas National Guard has soldiers and airmen on state active duty performing a variety of missions in support of the Arkansas Department of Health, the Arkansas Division of Emergency Management, and the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences.

The groom nervously twirls the ring and awaits for his bride...

Beautiful Maria arrives with a handful of white roses and the marriage license in hand.

Vows and rings are exchanged on the front porch under Buddy's direction.

Photographer Lori Sparkman graciously
agreed to catch it all even if from a distance
with her camera and artful eye.

Mr. and Mrs..."You may now kiss your bride!"

To bless the new marriage ceremony, a basket of white doves were released ...

Family stood nearby with their cameras
ready to snap and capture the dove release.
 All Less than 10 people!

Buddy signed the marriage license on the front porch and made it all official.

Since our 102 year old home is on the
National Historic Register,
I wonder if this is the first wedding
on this southern style front porch.

It surely is under these conditions!

Arkansas Guardsmen are supporting 12 active missions as part of the state’s COVID-19 response efforts.

Glancing down at new rings...

Hugs from dad

Our hearts were full as this couple bursting with love
got married on our front porch.

Monday morning back to work protecting us all...

Watching this wedding from afar and
knowing that this member of the National Guard
can pull off a stunning wedding
in a Sunday afternoon...all on the front porch.

Congratulations !

“‘I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the Lord,
‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, to give you hope and a future.’
Jeremiah 29:11
